The Perfect Latin@ DYI

‘Tis the season for giving 🎁, but ‘tis NOT the season to go into debt buying things you can’t afford because starting off the new year broke is no joke 😢. So porfa DON’T DO IT! Instead of spending a ton of dinero 💰 on gifts that anyone could buy, save yourself some money by putting a bit of thought 💭 into making inexpensive DIY gift baskets for your familia and amig@s that say, “Un montón de cariño went into putting together this present just for you!”

And por si acaso you’re wondering 🤔 how putting together a DIY gift basket can save you money 💰, pues: You can put together a DIY gift basket for way less money than a ready-to-go one with even simple things you find at the grocery store and yours won’t be mostly shredded paper or filler like the ones you buy at the store.

OK, but like how? We’re glad you asked because we’ve got all kinds of ideas 💡 coming right up. Of course, you can run 🏃🏽‍♀️ with these suggestions or come up with your own.

¡List@s?!

For abuela 👵🏽: A gift basket with a tin of cookies 🍪 that she can later use to save her sewing supplies, a cup, everything she needs to make hot chocolate, a framed picture of yourself and a handwritten ✍🏽 note telling her how much she means to you.

For your jefit@s 🧑🏽‍🤝‍🧑🏽: A game night gift basket with dominos, barajas, a lotería set and their favorite snacks and drinks. Also, make sure to write them each a note.

For your amig@s with a 🍭 sweet tooth: What about a basket filled with their favorite Mexican candy or whatever kind of candy they like? Also, print up any pictures you have of you guys together and include a note that shares “a sweet memory to go with your favorite sweets.” Ay, que nice, right?!

For your “candy is dandy, but liquor 🥃 is quicker” gente: Yes, we borrowed that phrase from poet Ogden Nash and also the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Anyway, the point is that for those who appreciate adult beverages, you could put together a basket that has all the makings for coquito or Kahlúa and coffee. Add a handwritten toast.

For anyone who enjoys cooking 🧑🏽‍🍳 or baking: Put together a gift basket that includes all the ingredients they need to make a favorite dish and include a handwritten recipe card. Think arepas, tamales, alfajores, polvorones, you name it.

Consider these suggestions a gift from us to you this holiday season. Your gift to yourself is to save your money!
