Eat, Love and Save Money
If there was a cookbook that contained dishes inspired by some of the most important stages of your life, what would be in it? Would it include old recipes passed down from your abuela? Or perhaps new ones that you recently discovered through TikTok? Believe it or not, what’s in this delicious cookbook is inspired by the dinero you had at the time. So let’s go back down memory lane.
We here at SUMA have put together a “Cookbook de tu Vida”, highlighting popular Latin@ dishes that would most likely accompany some major turning points in your life from a financial perspective. How many of the following dishes will be included in your life cookbook?
“Huevos con Weenie”: Mmmm the smell of scrambled eggs and fried hot dogs can only mean one thing – a perfectly economical (but delicious) meal. Stocked with protein to keep you satisfied and convenient for when you’re on the run (just wrap in a flour tortilla heated on the stove with the required burn marks). It may be your go-to meal when saving money is a priority – whether you’re looking to get a new car or your very own apartment.
“Ceviche”: it’s a star dish whenever someone brings ceviche – whether it’s for your college graduation party or your prim@’s baby shower/birthday party. After years of cold pizza and Takis, you’ll be in heaven with all that homemade mouthwatering goodness. And if you get money as a gift, be sure to have a financial plan for it. You can use this opportunity to build a positive financial future.
“Menudo”: Congratulations! After all that financial research, you finally bought a new home (Finally your tia metiche can stop asking!) What better dish to serve at your big housewarming party than a huge olla de menudo (or pozole for the others). Just be sure to keep the windows open so your new house doesn’t smell like boiled tripa for the next six months! Ay Dios!
“Fajitas”: Ask any dietician and fajitas are always at the top of the list of healthy Latin@ food. And with yummy plant-based options, there are plenty of choices for everyone. Healthy eating is invaluable during times of stress – especially when it comes to rebuilding your financial health after a difficult time. Just like overeating, be mindful of the stresses caused by overspending so debt doesn’t become another burden for you.
“Hallacas”: You can’t think of them without immediately thinking about the preparation party in the kitchen while listening to gaitas venezolanas with the entire family. Because nothing feels more than the holidays than these savory bundles of joy! Just don’t let the thrill of holiday-spending catch you blind-sided, especially if you’re a first-time credit card user. Like the three men, be wise in your spending. That way, when January comes and your little prim@s have already broken (or <gasp!> returned) the gifts you bought them, you won’t be crying over your credit card bill like La Llorona.
“Caldo”: This hot and savory soup is what tu mamá served when you were sick. So what better way to return the love than by making this dish for them, locally and abroad. There’s some special comfort in taking care of them – the same way they’ve always cared for you: home sweet home!
“Tres Leches Cake”: We all have that primo or tia who makes delicious cakes and helps bring the family together. This timeless dessert is perfect for celebrating exciting moments in your life: trade-school/college graduation, first rental (apartment, house), car lease, or first job. Just do your best to help build your financial health– that way, these moments will become precious memories.
